10 Points for Good Governance

10 Points for Good Governance

During recent years we have seen various foolish plans related to combating climate change (particularly the recent rush to biofuels based upon deforestation). Here are my 10 points for good governance and the actions required to restore balance in the planet.

1. Ensure all existing natural habitats are preserved as they are without further exploitation
2. Establish a global agreement for the exploitation of fisheries and forestry with protection zones which allow fish and forestry to recover
3. Ensure non compliant states are prevented from receiving finite resources through global trading systems if they fail to protect their natural assets.
4. Ensure any finite resource use such as mining, fishing, agriculture and oil extraction may only be exploited with a tax paid to cover the preservation and restoration of natural habitats and production of renewable energy etc.
5. Create a new global currency, which has a value set in the natural capital of these resources and require stock market trading to contribute to this currency.
6. Ensure energy production is switched from material resource use to energy resource use to help reduce the energy imbalance in our system (solar, wind, wave and hydro),
7. Undertake an annual audit of the state of the planet and monitor progress to sustainability by all nations through a set of good governance indicators
8. Establish a global agreement on population and set limits on carbon footprints per nation and individual
9. Ensure all planning is based upon the needs of the next generation not the present one and the likely world which will exist at that time
10. To accept that the free market, freedoms of the individual and standard democratic models are not solutions to global problems and they often limit the freedoms of many individuals, societies and affect future capacity, due to the imbalance of wealth, power and opportunity. To establish a set of good governance indicators to monitor national progress towards sustainability.

My pledges 2008

It is a great challenge to be focused on service and not on money. To rely on peoples realisation of the value you provide and their goodwill and generosity rather than commercial contracts. I have worked for Green Business UK as its main founder since 1997 it has been a real challenge and has meant that most of the time I have been working at significantly less than the minimum wage and have little to invest in green activities elsewhere. I have personally funded trees4africa and arranged the planting and protection of 5000 trees. That said I am not sure what will happen next to the initiative given my hectic workload and my commitments not to fly. So much of my work is unpaid and developmental but also necessary if we are to really make a difference. What is sad is just how many people take the good work I do and claim it as their own or try to copy what I do without acknowledgements and therefore undermine the campaign, but then again there are a great many people who credit me with assisting them in achieving their goals and generously support our aims. I know what we do together in the GTBS and trees4Africa is worthwhile. It is the best of the work we do together and the great challenges and foolish actions we face which inspires me to write my poetry.

I have made the following pledges for 2008-10

1. To invest in more energy saving actions at home (I already have a super insulated home which me and Andrea built in 2000 which has a SAP rating of over 100)
2. To investigate a woodburner system to replace my existing oil boiler
3. To purchase renewably sourced energy and otherwise only purchase items I need
4. To continue to reduce my meat eating and further support local and organic and fair trade
5. To continue to offset my carbon emissions through local tree planting (planting 6 trees per annum around my house and garden)
6. To find a way to pass on the trees4africa initiative to another body or organisation
7. To try and avoid peeing into drinking water provided it causes no offence
8. To avoid the use of chemicals in the home through the use of microfibres and naturals
9. To refuse to work for non committed organisations or projects and fly only if essential
10. To continue to try to be a better person fairer to all and able to face tough decisions
